The 35th Philippine Nurses Association of America National Convention was recently held on June 24-29, 2014 at Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas hosted by PNA Nevada chapter. The theme was “ PNAA Social Construct: Sustaining Global Health, Empowering Collaboration”.
June 24 was a welcome night for early arrivals and pre-registration. PNAA Executive Board meeting, Regional meetings and Circle of President regional representatives meetings kept the day busy on June 25. On Thursday evening, June 26, 2014, PNA WI was well represented by Gem Cubos during the parade of chapter banners at the networking night. In the very competitive talent show participated by the national and regional groups, NCR presented a Broadway revue inspired by the recent NCR convention. However, South Central region won this year’s talent presentation.
There were 3 educational programs offered in the national convention that showcased the development and achievement of PNAA 17th president, Ms. Victoria Navarro’s visions Strategic, Synergistic and Sustainable Social Action. The Leadership Institute on June 26 emphasized elements of relevance essential to the sustainability and growth of a non- profit organization like PNAA. Exhibits and poster presentations also graced the floor. In the afternoon, Leadership Scholars Program Level 2 participants presented their projects followed by presentations from Level 3 scholars. The Education Program on June 27 provided concurrent sessions dealing with concepts in community partnerships and innovative clinical practices. The keynote speaker was Mr. Fred de San Lazaro, correspondent of PBS News Hour. He spoke about Social Entrepreneurship: Business Strategies for Human and Environmental Wellbeing. This year, the Advanced Practice Nurse Institute on June 27 was established as part of the national convention. The theme was “ Advanced Practice Innovations in Health-Care Delivery”.
On Saturday, June 28 was the culmination of the PNAA/PNAAF 5k challenge inside the Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace. The total amount raised nationally was $ 76, 885.00. PNA Wisconsin raised $ 1,070.00, contributing to the total North Central Region amount of $11,865.00. All funds raised for the 5K supports research , educational, scholarship, community outreach and a building fund for a national headquarters for PNAA. In the evening, the Gala and Awards night at the Palace Tower ballroom was a glitzy, Vegas themed affair with showgirls gracing the event. PNAA 17th president 2012 – 2014, Ms. Victoria Navarro delivered a wonderful welcome address. This year’s keynote speaker was Jose L. Cuisia Jr., Ambassador of the Philippines to the United States. This year’s PNAA Nursing Excellence Awards and Legacy & Meritorious Awards were given out.
The highlight of the gala was the induction of PNAA officers 2014-2016 and incoming PNAA president , Leticia Hermosa, who unveiled in her acceptance speech, the theme for her term, “ Lead, Empower,Transform – Let’s Do It “. And finally, The nightingale lamp was bequeathed by Helen Ymson, president of PNA Nevada and host of this year’s convention to Tina Salvador of PNA Hawaii. The 36th PNAA National Convention on July 2015 will be in Honolulu, Hawaii.
